This Woodock is a mixed media sculpture. I made his body and head from a range of wools and wool batting, which I needle felted into shape and added the blend of top colours. His legs and feet are wrapped wire, which I painted in realistic colours. His beak and claws are clay which I shaped, baked, painted and varnished. His wings and tail are actual Woodcock feathers and he is mounted on a mossy bark plinth. He is about 30 cms long and stands 22cms high. The plinth is 37cms long and 14cms wide.
The bird took me many hours of concentrated work, he is a sculpture to be looked at and admired, he is not a toy to be played with. He was a joy to make, it was interesting to use real feathers for his plumage ad blending them in with the wool.
The Woodcock is a medium / small wading bird, that enjoys life in forests and woodlands. Its clever colouring camouflages it well in its woodland habitat.
